Salman's ceramics exhibition reminds of ancient pottery

by Lamia Zia

ISLAMABAD - Nomad Art Gallery organised "bon-fire" and a musical evening with young artists along with an exhibition of ceramics by young artist Salman Ikram here on Thursday, The exhibition will continue till December 30. The delicate pieces of ceramics at the exhibition were giving a look of antiquity and some of the pieces surpassed the refinement of old finds of Mesopotamian pottery. Artist's confidence and expertise were evident from almost every piece on the display.

Pottery, which always remained underdeveloped in Pakistan, Salman, a student of National College of Arts, Lahore, has highlighted it through his work. He studied product and the ceramics at the college and learned from Peter Wilson, a renowned ceramist from Australia.

Using both glossy and matt glazes, artist has employed diverse techniques for surface decoration on his wheel thrown and slip cast pots. The light colours of his ceramics gave a message of peace and love to others.

Salman Ikram's work is a an exploration of materials and techniques, which are employed to create individualistic forms, featuring a balance between shapes, textures and colours. He usually works on a single idea, expressed by not a perfect piece, but a series, a limited sequence of variations on a basic relationship of form.

The young potter has also explored internet to find new techniques and experiments in ceramics and pottery. He worked with his clay like a miniature painter. One can find all the qualities of a miniature painting in his pottery as certain pieces remind one of designer's service.
